Description: 1962 AMERICAN OIL COMPANY vintage magazine advertisement "Custer's Last Stand"

~ Custer's Last Stand - It happened in the valley of the Little Big Horn. Old Horned Horse, an overage Sioux chief unable to fight, saw the whole thing almost from the beginning. Climbing the cliffs to mourn the quick and early dead from the first and indecisive skirmish, he saw a column of cavalry appear in the wide ravine that edged the river. George Armstrong Custer, finding the bluffs too sheer for mounted descent, had taken the long way around. To certain death. For Custer, due perhaps to faulty scouting reports, had made the fatal mistake of underestimating the strength of the Sioux. Outmanned, outgunned and hemmed in by the cliffs and the river's quicksand on the other, the issue on Custer, hero of 60 previous battles, was never in doubt.

But Custer's five companies -- C, E, F, I and L -- gave a good account of themselves. Many Sioux warriors were found with the dead of the Seventh Cavalry.

General George Armstrong Custer -- known as "Yellow Hair" to his enemies the Sioux -- now rests at West Point, high above a different and peaceful river, the Hudson, named for still another pioneer.
