~ To their elders Picasso may be a puzzlement, but to the third graders of New York's P.S. 177 "he is like an inventor." Invited to see a collection of Picassos in a Manhattan home, they encountered all sorts of "funny" and "colorful" things -- a red-eared clown (right), a spooky house, sculptures made out of screws, toy cars and tableware. ... We saw King of the Carnival and it looked like an Indian to me. ... Inspired by 80-year-old Picasso, 8-year-old Iris Mollach concentrates on painting "a happy clown." ... One of the paintings had a lot of shapes in it. It was called Bather Playing Ball. ... I liked The Women of Algiers painting because it was an abstract and colorful and very very bright. ... The picture I liked best was Winter Landscape. ... With notebooks in hand, Jesse Lepkoff and Warren Lee marvel at the "original" Picassos. ... Admiring the familiar, Dana Younger and Dolores Clement fondle the head of a bronze baboon which Picasso made from two toy cars ... The third graders of P.S. 177 also toured several New York galleries which joined in the current showings of Picasso paintings and sculptures. Later, at the instigation of the teachers, they wrote letters to the artist. Some of the letters are printed here. ... Maria Arvelo ... Hiram Lee .. Iris Mollach ... Paul Levine ... Warren Lee ... Gary Wynshaw ... Jesse Lepkoff ... Sarah Amy Wenig ... Agape at a crane, Valerie Aviles stares at a valve which serves as the bird's crest. ~
