Description: 1980 LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS vintage magazine article "New Lease"

~ Lowell's New Lease - Lowell, Mass., was conceived in a single burst of Yankee inspiration in 1821 -- a whole city of hydropowered textile mills and lodging proper for a work force of Christian young women lured from the farms. By the 1850s, with 5.6 miles of man-made canals powering 12,000 looms, Lowell, 30 miles northwest of Boston along the Merrimack River, was the largest textile-manufacturing center on earth. ~
