~ Kenai, Alaska, was part of Russian America when this hewn-log chapel was built in 1846. The little sanctuary shelters the grave of its founder, Egumen Nicolais, the Russian monk who first brought Christianity to the area. Kenai, a fishing port about sixty-five miles southwest of Anchorage, developed from a fort established by a Russian shipmaster in 1791. Today about half of its 600 American residents are of Russian origin, and they worship at the village Orthodox church to which the congregation moved in 1896. The nearby chapel yard is a quiet place where children play, and the first settlers' church a monument to the pious adventurer who erected it. Photograph by Frank Ross ~
