Description: 1966 CHARLES DE GAULLE vintage magazine article "... Change the Face of Europe"

~ De Gaulle Sets Forth to Change the Face of Europe - Once again Charles de Gaulle, in a bold power play, had imposed his grand imprint upon history. Only three months after he had decreed that all NATO forces must leave French soil, he was touring the Soviet Union in pursuit of his apostolic vision of Europe as "a fertile whole," from the Atlantic to the Urals, that would vastly limit U.S. influence in her affairs. For De Gaulle, NATO had served its purpose in containing Russia after the war. Now he believes that the integrated military alliance is no longer useful, and indeed stands in the way of easing East-West relations. The U.S., angered by De Gaulle's abrupt unilateral effort to dismantle NATO, shares his hope for a thaw in the Cold War though it saw little chance of success in his mission to Russia. But De Gaulle and his call for an end to Europe's "sterile division" have already changed Europe -- and have changed too, for better or for worse, the role the U.S. plays in her destiny. - LIFE - vol. 61, No. 2 - July 8, 1966 - SIGNS OF CHANGE. At Moscow University De Gaulle calls for a cultural and scientific alliance with Russia. Below, U.S. jeeps at Nancy stand ready to leave France. - 'Resist Him, He Hates You. Obey Him, He Scorns You' - by CHARIES J. V. MURPHY - An alliance with its heart cut out - The High Stake in the Power Game: Germany ~
