Description: 1966 THE TEXAS TRADEMARK vintage magazine article ~ Flair for the Flamboyant

~ The Texas Trademark: Flair for the Flamboyant - Photographed by Ralph Crane - PART TWO - People who relish the big and showy -- and doing as they please - Texas is so big and possessed of so many cultures that from end to end its people don't talk or even look much alike. But the one quality that cuts across their diversity and seems most to draw them together is exuberance, a bubbling manifestation of the excitement described last week in the first of LIFE's two essays on Texas. The riders above are on the Salt Grass Trail Ride, an annual three-day, 100-mile trek on which 1,700 people whoop it up along the route of a famous old cattle drive with everyone mounted on horse or wagon and barbecues held each night. The gay Rangerettes, precision drill and dance team from Kilgore College in the heart of the East Texas oil fields, show up all over the state and country -- at bowl games and presidential inaugurations -- to twirl their flags and flash their smiles. - Monuments and a bigtime religion - A state hooked on festivals - Henry Ward, Jr. - Hotel Warwick - Houston Stock Show - Astrodome ~
